Pest Control used to be simple. Pesticides had high toxicity, long residual properties, and nobody cared about how it affected their health, the environment, or the ozone layer, and no-one ever got sued. The days of FFT, and Strychnine are gone forever. Today, the public’s attitude has changed. But, it’s still a life or death situation as far as the bug is concerned.
The job of the pest control professional has become much more challenging. With a few exceptions, the EPA approves products that break down in 90 days. Now, identification and knowing the life cycle anatomy, growth development, biology and behavior, is the key to controlling pests.
Do-it-yourselfers who spray the baseboards without knowing what bug they are after, where they are hiding, or what they are eating, are wasting chemival, increasing exposure, and are unlikely to accomplish their goal. Depending on the pest, we use target specific pesticides, baits, pheromone traps, or growth inhibitors, with little or no exposure to people or animals.

Most newer homes in Georgia are either built on concrete slabs or have basements, but there are many homes with crawlspaces. Only plumbers, inspectors, termite techs, and a few unfortunate others ever have work under an house, and we all feel the same way about crawl spaces. We have all encountered spiders, and some of us have even ran across snakes or animals that have made there home underneath yours. If you are one of the home owners that have a crawlspace, there are a few things you need to be aware of. All cellulose material (wood, paper, cardboard) should be removed from crawl spaces, and there should be a vapor barrier (4 mil. clear plastic sheeting) covering at least 80% of the area. Proper ventilation is very important to reduce the moisture (see the building codes for your area). Screens with less than 1/4″ openings should be covering all vents and access holes to keep rodents and other animals out of your crawlspace.
Remember, bugs love moisture, keep your house as dry as possible. Keep shrubbery at least 2 feet from your house, keep the vents open at least 90% of the time, clean your gutters, and have the soil grated so the water will run away, not toward your home. Sprinkler systems should be as far from the foundation as possible and do not over water. I like to think of it as letting your house “breath”, don’t restrict the airflow and allow the fresh air to circulate around your home to keep it dry.
I hope you are enjoying the mild winter we are having in Woodstock, and all over the Atlanta area. Unfortunately, with the lack of freezing temperatures, ants, American roaches, spiders, wasps, bees and crawling insects are off to an early start this year. I just kicked open a fire ant mound today and noticed winged alates, (swarmers) at the top of the mound with hundreds of exit holes. This means they are ready for their mass expansion of new queens and colonies. Although most insects are not as obvious as the six inch tall fire ant mounds, I am finding that many insects and spiders are flourishing earlier than usual.
I am a firm believer in an ounce of prevention is worth a gallon of cure. I am confident that my regular customers, who have my quarterly maintenance program, are well protected. If you want to enjoy the spring without the worry of a home invasion of insects, all you have to do is call us at Coyne Pest Control, at 678-243-9901.
We would like to take a moment to extend a sincere thank you to all my customers from Woodstock, Canton, Marietta, Kennesaw, Roswell, Alpharetta, Holly Springs, Cartersville, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Smyrna, Johns Creek, Norcross, Cummings, Suwanee, Lawrenceville, Lithonia, Decatur, Stone Mountain and, of course Atlanta. We have been very fortunate to have such a loyal customer base who are continuously finding us new customers.
My wife and I started Coyne Pest Control, LLC about six and a half years ago and my only regret is that we didn’t start it up sooner. I have been doing pest control, rodent baiting, and termite treatments for fifteen years. We moved to Woodstock in May of 2009 from Sandy Springs. We just love this area, it is close enough to Atlanta that we have access to all the big city amenities, yet Woodstock is rural enough to be peaceful, and close to nature.
I love my work, especially in the Atlanta area. I read somewhere that Atlanta is the only major city in the United States that is built in a forest. Of course, along with all the beautiful trees, and landscapes, comes a very large variety of insects. I guess, what I like most about doing pest control, is that everybody needs it. I don’t really have to sell the service, I only have to sell myself. Our motto, “Each customer served, builds our reputation.” is what has grown our business. We work very hard to keep the customers we have because we know that there are more than two thousand pest control companies in Georgia, and it isn’t hard to find someone else to take your money. We started at ground zero in 2010 but we now have three technicians and soon will have two people in the office. We have over 500 repeating customers and growing fast. We are still learning about how to promote our business through social media. Fortunately, most of our customers have come from referrals from existing satisfied customers.
Again, my family and I would like to thank all of our loyal customers. You have made our experience an exciting one and we hope to serve you for many years to come.
Thank you sincerely,
Chris and Michelle Coyne – Owners
